The Most Rewarding Dua After Adhan!

Supplication (Dua) is one of the best acts of worship, the greatest way of getting closeness to Allah, and a cause of goodness and blessings.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught us the supplications that a Muslim should say at specific times and circumstances, including the Dua after the Adhan (call to prayer).

The rewards for saying the Dua after the Adhan:

  1. Allah will send blessings upon you 10 times, forgive 10 of your sins and raise you by 10 degrees.
  2. You will receive the intercession of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the Day of Judgement
  3. Your minor sins will be forgiven

The complete Dua consists of three parts, made up of a few short lines and takes less than 30 seconds to recite.

1. Send blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)

First, it is recommended to send peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) after the Adhan by the agreement of all four schools; Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali.

The proof of this is in the following Hadith:

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:

“When you hear the mu’adhdhin, say what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessing upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold.” (Narrated by Muslim (384)).

Sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is one of the greatest acts of worship encouraged in Islam, as has been proven through various evidences from the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

Indeed, Allah and His Angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe! Send blessings on him and greet him (with) greetings. (Qur’an, 33:56)

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is reported to have said in an authentic hadith:

“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold and will erase from him ten misdeeds and raise him ten degrees in status.” (Narrated by Al-Nasa’i (1297) and Ahmad (11998); classed as Sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Sunan an-Nasa’i).

Dua to send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ):

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَ سَلِّمْ عَلَى نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ
Allaahumma salli wa sallim ‘alaa Nabiyyinaa Muhammad.
O Allah, send your peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad.

2. Ask for al-Waseela for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)

Next, it is recommended to make a Dua for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to be granted al-Waseela, the highest station in paradise which only one person can attain. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) promised that his intercession will be granted to whoever makes this Dua after Adhan.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:

“When you hear the mu’adhdhin, say what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessing upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold. Then ask Allah to grant me al-waseela, for it is a station in Paradise which only one of the slaves of Allah will attain, and I hope that I will be the one. Whoever asks for al-waseela for me, intercession will be permissible for him.” (Narrated by Muslim (384), under the chapter “It Is Recommended For The One Who Hears The Mu’adhdhin To Repeat His Words, Then To Send Salat Upon The Prophet (ﷺ) And Ask Allah To Grant Him Al-Waseelah”).

He (ﷺ) said in another report: “Whoever after listening to the Adhan says,

‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa’imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu’ [O Allah , Lord of this perfect call and established prayer. Grant Muhammad the intercession and favour, and raise him to the honoured station You have promised him], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection”. (Narrated by al-Bukhari (614), under the chapter “Dua at the time of Adhan”).

Saying this Dua regularly after the Adhan will make you eligible for the intercession of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the Day of Judgement, a day which will be 50,000 years long and on which neither wealth, parents, children nor friends will be of any benefit.

The intercession of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) could either be a source of forgiveness for your sins or a means to attain a higher rank in paradise.

3. Say “I am pleased with Allah as my Lord…”

Finally, it is desirable for the listener of the Mu’adhin to say after he finishes his call to prayer:

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. (And that) I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord, and with Muhammad as my Messenger, and Islam as my religion.

Whoever says this will have his minor sins forgiven.

The proof is in the following hadith:

Sa’d b. Abu Waqqas reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If anyone says on hearing the Mu’adhdhin: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. (And that) I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islam as my religion, his sins will be forgiven. (Sahih Muslim 386, Sunan Abi Dawud 525 in the chapter “What Should Be Said When One Hears The Mu’adhdhin”, Sunan Ibn Majah 721, Sunan an-Nasa’i 679 (in the chapter “The Supplication Following The Adhan”)
